Molecular Sieve type 3A is an alkali metal alumino-silicate; it is the potassium form of the type A crystal structure. Type 3A has an effective pore opening of about 3 angstroms (0.3nm).
Why does the Ethanol Industry use 3A Molecular Sieve?
Ethanol and water are both highly polar compounds and are strongly adsorbed on standard adsorbents. Because of the co-adsorption of ethanol, the actual water removal capacity can be very low.
3A Molecular Sieve solves this co-adsorption problem because of its smaller pore diameter (3 angstrom). In theory this will not allow the 4.4 angstrom ethanol molecule to get adsorbed. The 3A molecular sieve will adsorb the 2.8 angstrom water molecule.
